We celebrate the incredible achievement of our female U15 Australian Junior Champion, while also honouring the life and legacy of a beloved South Australian whose impact will never be forgotten. Nominations are now open for the 2025 SA Squash and Racquetball Awards, and we are proud to introduce a new junior player encouragement award thanks to a donation from the McGregor family. Squash SA are looking to thank club volunteers through the Squash SA Volunteer Recognition Program with squash.com.au and introduce a team of racquetball ambassadors who will help energise and grow the sport across the state. And of course, no edition would be complete without the witty and thought-provoking musings of AnonTheMouse, always a highlight worth reading.

Individual National Championships.

Sixteen determined juniors from South Australia journeyed to the Ballarat Squash and Racketball Club to take on the nation’s finest at the 2025 Australian Junior Championships. Facing fierce competition, our players rose to the challenge with grit and heart.

7 juniors battled their way into the Quarter Finals, 4 powered through to the Semi Finals, 2 took centre stage in the Finals of their age group. And in a proud moment for the state, South Australia brought home ONE national title!

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible adults who supported the team, Team Manager - Damian Molineux, Coaches - Lucas Norman and Justin Beard, and Team Cook - Deb van Zon.

A special shout-out to the parents who made the trip to Ballarat, not only cheering on their own kids but lifting the spirits of the entire team. Your support made all the difference.

Awards Dinner

The AJC Dinner remains a standout highlight of the tournament, bringing together all players to honour the place winners and celebrate the 10 National Champions. Among the evening’s recognitions was the prestigious MC Hazel Award, presented to the fairest player of the individual tournament.

Throughout the event, states and umpires cast daily votes for players who demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship or volunteered their time to support others. Every South Australian junior received points, with three polling impressively over the four-day competition.

In the boys’ category, Bryce Correa secured an outstanding second place. In the girls’ category, Olivia van Zon also finished second, with Tammara Bone close behind in fourth.

A huge congratulations to all, your efforts and character make us proud!

Teams Championships

In the team’s event, South Australia finished in 5^th place. Our juniors faced some tough competition against the best players each state had to offer. They played with determinations taking some games against top players and making themselves proud of their efforts.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Metze Bradey, a cherished figure in the South Australian squash community and a beloved father, friend, and mentor. Metze passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, generosity, and unwavering support for the sport and the people around him.

Metze’s contributions to squash were both profound and enduring. As President of the Squash Rackets Association of SA from 1990 to 1992, he led with integrity and vision, helping to shape the future of the sport in South Australia. His commitment extended beyond leadership roles, he was a passionate advocate for women’s participation in squash, serving on the National Women’s Committee throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

A tireless supporter of emerging talent, Metze managed State Junior and Senior Teams on more than ten occasions, guiding countless young athletes with his trademark warmth and encouragement. His involvement as part owner of the Blackwood Squash Club was equally impactful, whether chairing committee meetings or spearheading fundraising efforts, Metze was always at the heart of the action, never seeking the spotlight but always making a difference.

Perhaps his proudest role was that of father to Sharon Bradey, former world No. 12, whose achievements on the international stage were a testament to Metze’s unwavering support and belief in her potential.

Those who knew Metze will remember him as a very caring and generous man, someone who gave freely of his time and his wisdom. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Metze Bradey’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the sport he loved, and the community he helped build. He will be dearly missed.

Chasing Olympic Glory: Alex Haydon’s Road to Los Angeles 2028

With squash making its long-awaited Olympic debut in Los Angeles 2028, South Australian athlete Alex Haydon is chasing a dream that’s been years in the making: to become one of the first squash players to represent Australia on this historic stage.

Currently ranked in the mid 60's on the Women's PSA Ranking, for Alex, the journey to the Olympics is more than a personal ambition, it’s a mission to elevate squash in Australia and inspire the next generation of athletes. To compete at the elite level, Alex’s training and competition schedule spans the globe. Year-round international travel is essential, with a strategic base in the USA to access top-tier tournaments and facilities. This global lifestyle ensures exposure to the world’s best players and the highest level of competition, crucial for Olympic readiness.

Alex’s preparation includes world-class coaching, cutting-edge sports science, and a rigorous recovery regimen. Every detail matters. From biomechanics and nutrition to mental resilience and injury prevention. It’s a full-time pursuit of excellence, designed to push boundaries and unlock peak performance.

The financial reality of elite sport is daunting. It costs over $50,000 each year to train, travel, and compete at the highest level. Squash SA hosted a Gin Tasting Fundraiser for Alex on the 12^th October with many thanks to one of our sponsors Dapper Chap Gin. Nearly 30 people were in attendance, and all had a wonderful time. Thank you all for supporting Alex.

The Southern: A Legacy of Support for Squash in South Australia

Located at 1303 South Road, St Mary’s, The Southern is a licensed venue owned and operated by Squash SA. Originally acquired in 1996 from the South Adelaide Football Club, following their relocation to Noarlunga, the venue was initially named Racquets SA. In 2014, Squash SA rebranded the facility as The Southern, accompanied by external renovations to enhance its appearance.

In 2024, the venue underwent its most significant internal transformation since acquisition. The entire floor plan was redesigned, with the installation of new fittings, carpeting, and furniture. Upon reopening, the dining menu was revitalised, and patrons have warmly embraced the refreshed ambiance across the bar, bistro, and gaming areas.

This strategic investment traces back to the foresight of the Squash SA Board, led at the time by Len Atkins, who recognised the potential to utilise association funds to establish a business that would secure the long-term future of squash in South Australia. Notably, Squash SA remains the only squash association in Australia to own a venue that financially sustains the sport; other associations rely solely on membership and affiliation fees to support resources, staff and the development of their sport. The current success and condition of The Southern stand as a testament to the dedication of both past and present Board Members. Their unwavering commitment to supporting strategic venue management and ensuring compliance with gaming and liquor licence requirements and regulatory standards has been instrumental in securing the association’s continued growth and impact.

The Gaming, Bar, and Bistro operations at The Southern have played a pivotal role in funding Squash SA’s initiatives. These include covering staff salaries, providing grants for club development programs and pathways for juniors, SA Open squash and racquetball championships and promoting squash in schools more than any other state squash body.

Club and Volunteer Award Nominations

The 2026 Annual Awards Dinner will be held once again at The Arkaba Hotel after great feedback from this year's event.

It is a time to come together and celebrate squash and racquetball in SA from 2025 and the important people that contribute to it.

Clubs can now complete nominations for Club of the Year and Squash and Racquetball Service Awards with the criteria available on our website.

Squash SA/Racquetball SA has planned the implementation of a Racquetball Ambassador program in 2025-26 in an effort to rebuild the racquetball pennant competition.

The goal is to create ambassadors similar to what previously existed naturally in a thriving club committee or membership structure. Passionate racquetballers will be identified at club level, resourced and empowered to share the game they love with friends, colleagues and new members acquired through social media advertising, without any financial implication to the individual or club.

The overall goal is to introduce up to 20 new players into the racquetball pennant competitions by the end of 2026.

Clubs and players, keep an eye out for this program as we are seeking volunteers to be involved.

South Australia has produced many remarkable athletes, but few have left a legacy as enduring and multifaceted as Ken McGregor. A true all-rounder, Ken excelled across several sports, most notably tennis, where he reached the pinnacle of international competition. In 1952, he claimed the Australian singles title and was runner-up at Wimbledon the year prior, achieving a career-high world ranking of No. 3.

Yet it is Ken’s pioneering contribution to squash in South Australia that serves as the inspiration for a special annual honour: the Ken McGregor Junior Encouragement Award.

In the mid-1950s, Ken McGregor, alongside his business partner Reg Clements, built Adelaide’s first commercial squash courts in Ovingham. What began as a modest two-court facility eventually expanded to eight courts, laying the foundation for the sport’s growth in the state.

Ken didn’t just build the courts; he represented his club at District level (previous to Premier League), he held the No. 1 position and was, for a time, the No. 2 ranked squash player in South Australia.

To honour Ken’s legacy and his role in introducing squash to generations of South Australians, the McGregor family and Squash SA has established the Ken McGregor Junior Encouragement Award, through a generous donation from the family. This award not only celebrates athletic promise but also encourages young players to embody the values that made Ken McGregor a beloved figure in South Australian sport.

Recipients are selected based on their demonstration of the attributes of fair play, commitment, attitude, leadership and ambassadorship. Each winner will receive their name engraved on the Ken McGregor Junior Encouragement Award perpetual shield, an individual trophy to keep, and a $200 voucher to be used specifically for squash equipment.

Clubs have received more information on this award including how the process of the voting system.

Mount Barker Districts Squash Club recently held its inaugural Squash Pennant Rules, Safety & Information Session, and it was a smashing success! The whole club embraced the opportunity to learn how common rules of squash apply within a game. Their session was a sell-out, with the maximum capacity of spectators all enthusiastically waving their referee decision cards.

The club’s Thursday night in-house pennant competition is currently running at full capacity, a testament to the rising popularity of squash in the region. With demand soaring, keep your eyes peeled for a second night of in-house pennant it may be on the horizon for this vibrant and expanding club.

This recent referee session was held in Mount Barker to serve a dual purpose: to enhance the rule knowledge of the club’s in-house players and to recognise the club’s outstanding commitment to player engagement and affiliation with Squash SA and the use of the Revoulutionise software to run their competitions. It was a fantastic collaborative effort, well done to everyone involved!

The 2025 JTM Squash Barossa Doubles Tournament returned to the Rex this past weekend, serving up its third consecutive year of action-packed matches and community spirit. With all 24 team spots snapped up across three divisions, including the newly introduced 'Family' division, the event welcomed 48 enthusiastic players from across South Australia, stretching from Port Pirie to Onkaparinga.

This year’s standout addition was the 'Family' division, pairing parents with their children for a rare chance to share the court. It was a hit among families, many of whom turned the tournament into a weekend getaway in the beautiful Barossa.

While squash doubles were at the heart of the event, the real focus was on fun, connection, and soaking up the local charm. Thanks to major sponsor Jay Molloy from JTM Squash, who contributed over $2500, and a generous donation from Yalumba Wines, the tournament offered unbeatable value and unforgettable memories. Players enjoyed best-dressed team prizes, complimentary merchandise, wine giveaways, and gin tastings that added a festive flair.

Saturday featured three matches per team, followed by a lively dinner at the Tanunda Hotel, filled with laughter and camaraderie. Sunday kicked off with final matches to determine division standings, while Mark Witcomb and Murray Fanning fired up the BBQ for a delicious lunch.

Here’s to another year of great rallies and even greater memories!

Look out for next year's tournament, with it's growing popularity, it could soon be the largest tournament on our calendar.
